Danielle's natural pigments can come from two sources: botanical and mineral. She mostly uses minerals such as rocks, soils, and clays, and the pigment can be mixed with both oil and watercolour media. The resulting paints dry and cure the same way as any store-bought paint, and they don’t rub off the surface. The vibrancy from mineral pigments does not fade over time. Occasionally, she uses colours that are sourced from plants, such as berries, avocado, and onion skins, as inks. These inks are "alive" and change hue and vibrancy over time, adding an element of chance to the piece.
Some of Danielle's pieces are painted on paper that she handmade using recycled material in her home. The handmade papers come framed and should not be handled without protective glass as they are much more delicate than store-bought paper.

Danielle Petti

Danielle forages for rocks in nature, grinds them down into the paint, and uses handmade papers or natural substrates to make paintings inspired by motherhood, human origins, and sustainability. Using exclusively handmade paints, she draws attention to the materiality of the paint and to how the earth pigments are interconnected to all bodies.

She is a mother of two, with a BFA from Ryerson University in Toronto. She lived abroad in Italy and recently relocated back to Canada. Focusing now on this hands-on and meaningful art medium, she brings pieces of nature into the homes of collectors. She is often motivated by environmental and feminist issues in our world - but often offers optimism, evoking a sense of wonder in the natural colours of our planet.

Artterra's headquarters are located in Toronto, which is situated on the traditional territory of many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. We recognize and honor the enduring presence and contributions of the Indigenous peoples and their languages, cultures, and histories, and are committed to learning from and working with them towards mutual understanding and respect. As a business that represents artists from all over current Canada, we acknowledge that we live, work, and play on the unceded territories of Indigenous peoples across this land. We remain committed to recognizing their sovereignty, respecting their rights, and supporting their ongoing efforts towards reconciliation.
