When we sketched this sculpture and then looked at the results of our woodwork, we thought that there’s something surrealistically elusive about it, like in the works of Salvador Dalí. So we call this sculpture “Salvador”.

Artwork Details

Size: 3 x 3 x 6.5 inches

The sculpture dimensions include the pedestal size.

Medium: Spalted beech

Support: Brass

Note: The sculpture is mounted on a pedestal via the brass holder. The pedestal is considered part of the sculptural composition.

Design Process: The sculpture has been uniquely designed, starting from paper sketches and 3D modelling in engineering software. After the rough carving on a CNC router, they were finely carved and sanded by hand, assembled and mounted on a stand.

About the Artist

Alma is an Ottawa-based family design studio founded in 2022 by Maria and Nik. Working together and starting the studio has enabled the couple to embrace and expand their creative practices. Maria is the experimental design force of Alma, responsible for the creation and ideation processes, sketching out concepts, and coming up with new products and objects. While Nik’s love for wood and his curious engineering mindset drives the studio to constantly improve the technology and perfect the outcome of their work.

Alma’s mission is to create objects of aesthetic value that demonstrate the care and soul that the couple put into them through art, design and craftsmanship. Attentive to details and quality, the studio focuses on creating timeless pieces that stick with their owners throughout life. That’s why the primary material of Alma’s products is wood - familiar, versatile, sustainable material of the future, carefully chosen to sustain function and extend the life of Alma’s creations. By highlighting the patterns of knots, the annual rings, the holes left from the bugs and worms, the studio embraces the nature of wood highlighting, what otherwise would be considered imperfections. But for Alma it is here to exist and be presented as natural beauty.
