This series is a celebration of the self that is grounded in the understanding of its own power and unique beauty. Painted with the wet-on-wet technique, the figure blooms from the ground and settles into her space: gentle, tender, and sure.

Created in collaboration with award-winning portrait photographer and confidence cheerleader Michele Mateus, this series reads like a love letter to the self, these paintings honour the power of the feminine, and celebrate moments of spiritual growth and self-acceptance.

THE ARTIST'S STORY

Kendra Schellenberg

Kendra Schellenberg is an award-winning artist born and raised in the Fraser Valley, BC. She obtained her BFA at the local university in 2016 and has been living and working as an artist ever since. She works in a variety of mediums, but is often drawn back to her favourite: pen and ink. Inspired by delicate line work and lush florals, her work explores themes of femininity, body, and identity. Her practice is driven by a desire to examine and empower the feminine, celebrate our natural world, and have her viewer question their status quo.

“Growing up, I was always very aware of my body and how I looked. It’s taken me a long time to feel comfortable and safe in my own skin, and when I think about how feeling badly about myself held me back throughout the years, it’s truly heart wrenching. I think I often create for that younger version of myself, as well as anyone who may still be in that headspace about themselves. The BloomingBody series of paintings were created as a love-letter to the self, to honour the power of the feminine, and to celebrate moments of spiritual growth and self-acceptance. My hope for them is to live in a home where they might offer a sense of ease and empowerment to their viewer every time they are seen.”
