This is a double-sided painting, with nude portraits on both sides of the Framed Canvas. One being more abstract, flowing with expressionism, and the second side being more intentional, “See me”.
Aly McDonald is a Black-biracial Mad Acrylic Painter and Visual Artist who creates bold and vibrant nude portraits to challenge the sexualization of bodies. Her work promotes body neutrality, positivity, acceptance, and bodily integrity, inspired by her experiences with sexual assault and mental illness.
Chakras from Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism are present throughout the paintings in the Crown Series.
In “Crown”, Red being the dominating colour, it represents my Root chakra, the base of my being.
Yellow representing my Solar plexus, my wisdom.
The colour green representing my Heart chakra, subtlety strung here and there throughout my hair.
Purple represents my Crown chakra, my spirituality.
Blue is also slightly suggested to represent my third eye.
The position of the figure is also very significant for that I am showing you all of me, yet at the very same time, keeping myself hidden.
The juxtaposition of being completely exposed, yet still somehow hidden and guarded is emphasised by the bright white highlights and the dark disappearing background. This black void is meant to leave room for interpretation because what the viewer is presented is not my whole as a being; implying that there is so much more.
