The Wandering Path - a snail created with detailed layers of colour and patterns going for a slow walk. The snail represents taking time to notice, enjoy and let the mind wander.

My grandmother’s stewardship of the Columbia Valley Wetlands influences me to increasingly consider the sustainability of the source, processing, and disposal of materials in my art practice. Sourcing plastic free materials and responsible packaging, and repurposing magazines, books and textiles are all part of my efforts to lessen the environmental impact of my art.

Marissa Creative Arts

Marissa Schiesser is a mixed media collage artist in Vancouver, BC. She uses found images and materials, paint and textiles to create playful, intricate pieces with elements of surprise. Her colour palette is shaped by bold and colourful florals mingled with soft tones of mountains and ocean. Marissa's work uplifts any space with pops of colour and unexpected elements and details.

Marissa wants her artwork to inspire you to embrace art, texture and colour in your home and life.

"When creating collage art, I intricately cut out fine details to highlight images, textures and colours, shaping them into new stories. I appreciate the search for images, repetition of marks, scissoring motions and following lines seen and unseen as a type of meditation."

Marissa's work is influenced by the female artists of the past who carved their own paths in the male-dominated world of abstract art. These women painted fearlessly and dared to call themselves artists.

Marissa's grandmother’s stewardship of the Columbia Valley Wetlands influences her to think about the materials she uses. Her practice increasingly considers the sustainability of the source, processing, and disposal of art materials.

Marissa's artwork has been exhibited at the Golden Arts Council Gallery, BC Festival of the Arts, Textile Arts Center Gallery in Brooklyn THIS Gallery in Vancouver and Arterra. She holds a fashion design diploma specializing in textile arts, surface design, and weaving.

Marissa lives, plays and creates on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations who have cared for these lands since time immemorial.

Artterra's headquarters are located in Toronto, which is situated on the traditional territory of many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. We recognize and honor the enduring presence and contributions of the Indigenous peoples and their languages, cultures, and histories, and are committed to learning from and working with them towards mutual understanding and respect. As a business that represents artists from all over current Canada, we acknowledge that we live, work, and play on the unceded territories of Indigenous peoples across this land. We remain committed to recognizing their sovereignty, respecting their rights, and supporting their ongoing efforts towards reconciliation.
