The drawing of bodymaps came out of a visual meditation practice I developed during late pregnancy. I let the strongest occurring physical sensation lead the brush/pen, the paper functions as a mirror. I’m intrigued to seek the right balance between staying true to my experience as I’m drawing, while simultaneously ’art directing’ the final piece of work by utilising the movements the body offers me. The final drawings function as visual testaments of these swaying and subtle conversations with the body.

About the Artist

The central focus of Liz's current practice lies on the body and its subtle and nuanced ways of communicating. We tend to only become aware of its rhythms and going-ons in states of imbalance. Her ongoing series, including BODYMAPS and TRACING SENSATIONS, explore mark-making as a tool to capture the quiet sensations that lie in-between, the constant tingling and murmuring that make up our physical selves. Each drawing is a transcript of a conversation with these sensations.

Liz's work ranges from abstract drawing practices and writing to experiments in performance and installation art. Often the projects are led by a particular interest in a material, but more often than not her practice is based on letting the work choose the medium best suited for the desired expression.

Preferred materials for the explorations tend to be of natural matter, as they are inclined to tell stories of their own, which makes for interesting conversations between medium and paint. Some materials include: Wood, paper, fabric, skin, found or repurposed objects (as seen in the vinyl tiles series), and others.

Recent works also include: CONCRETE NATURE, a photo series exploring the interplay between organic matter and woman-made objects; BETWEEN, a short film (shown at EECC 2019 Moving Art), examining relationships through simple graphic shapes and movement; SOMA –BODYMAPS IN LABYRINTH, a 2020 group performance and video work, taking the idea of mapping somatic sensations off the paper and letting participants function as each other’s canvases, and more.

Liz grew up on the Austrian/Czech border and currently lives n the traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, Vancouver, Canada. She holds a BA in Graphic and Media Design from New Design University in St.Pölten, Austria. She thrives in silence and intimate collaborations and finds inspiration in learning with and from her three-year-old daughter.
