"As an interior designer, I'm always on the hunt for unique pieces that breathe life into spaces. Artterra's curated collection never disappoints. Each piece is a conversation starter, and their commitment to originality is unmatched. A designer's dream destination." — Amelia L.

The default mode network can be thought of as the conversations we have with ourselves - our overthinking, our self-doubt, and our self-importance. It is a network of interacting brain regions that is active when a person is not focused on the outside world. To be completely present is to quiet those thoughts, to allow consciousness to fully experience what is being sensed from the outside world. Painting with my hands and dirt is an attempt to immerse myself in the outside world and to lose the feeling of having a self.

Size: 18x18 in | 45.7x45.7 cm

Frame: No

Medium: Foraged Pigment and Oil on Canvas

Pigments from Costa Rica plus black oil paint.

Danielle's natural pigments can come from two sources: botanical and mineral. She mostly uses minerals such as rocks, soils, and clays, and the pigment can be mixed with both oil and watercolour media. The resulting paints dry and cure the same way as any store-bought paint, and they don’t rub off the surface. The vibrancy from mineral pigments does not fade over time. Occasionally, she uses colours that are sourced from plants, such as berries, avocado, and onion skins, as inks. These inks are "alive" and change hue and vibrancy over time, adding an element of chance to the piece.
Some of Danielle's pieces are painted on paper that she handmade using recycled material in her home. The handmade papers come framed and should not be handled without protective glass as they are much more delicate than store-bought paper.

Every piece of artwork you select is carefully packed and dispatched directly from our artists' studios, ensuring both its authenticity and quality.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we advise our artists to utilize sustainable packaging whenever feasible, minimizing our ecological footprint. Proudly serving the US, Canada, and the UK, we're not just about sharing art, but doing so in a manner that respects our planet.

Benefit from free shipping on orders over $150 to the US & Canada, making it even more convenient to beautify your space.

Your complete satisfaction is paramount to us. Therefore, we've instituted a flexible return policy that allows you to send back any piece within 7 days of its arrival, should it not match your vision.

THE ARTIST'S STORY

Danielle Petti

Danielle forages for rocks in nature, grinds them down into the paint, and uses handmade papers or natural substrates to make paintings inspired by motherhood, human origins, and sustainability. Using exclusively handmade paints, she draws attention to the materiality of the paint and to how the earth pigments are interconnected to all bodies.

She is a mother of two, with a BFA from Ryerson University in Toronto. She lived abroad in Italy and recently relocated back to Canada. Focusing now on this hands-on and meaningful art medium, she brings pieces of nature into the homes of collectors. She is often motivated by environmental and feminist issues in our world - but often offers optimism, evoking a sense of wonder in the natural colours of our planet.
