Darryl Moore

Darryl W. Moore, professionally known as GisaHuut, is an accomplished artist and alumni of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, graduating in 2008. Born in 1982 in Terrace, BC, GisaHuut hails from the Nisga’a Nation and is a member of the Gitgigeenix family under Simoogit Nagwa 'un. His ancestral roots are in Laxgalts'ap, situated in the picturesque Nass Valley. Currently residing in Kitwanga with his loving partner and family, GisaHuut serves as an auxiliary instructor at Freda Diesing, offering guidance to both first- and second-year students.

Under the mentorship of master carver Ken McNeil, a founding member of the Freda Diesing School, GisaHuut has honed his craft. His artistic journey is enriched by collaborations with esteemed carvers such as Alver Tait in the Laxgalts'ap carving project (2006/07), Chester Moore on the Nisga’a Valley Health clinic pole contract (2011), and Stan Bevan/Ken McNeil on various contracts, including poles for local bands and international projects reaching places like China and Minnesota. Notably, GisaHuut contributed to a pole for Emily Carr University under the mentorship of Dempsey Bob.

GisaHuut's educational foundation extends beyond formal training, encompassing practical experiences that include the creation of a 6' wolf pole (1 of 8) for Coast Mountain College's new Dorms. His artistic repertoire goes beyond monumental sculptures, as he finds joy in painting crest designs and carving a diverse range of items, including panels, paddles, plaques, spoons, bowls, and masks of various sizes.

Embracing the cultural significance of his art, GisaHuut firmly believes that "Our Art is a Cultural Right and Responsibility." He sees it as his duty to carry the teachings bestowed upon him with quiet pride and to pass down this knowledge to the next generations. Through his work, GisaHuut exemplifies a commitment to preserving and sharing the rich cultural heritage of the Nisga’a Nation.
